CAST OF CHARACTERS PROFESSOR GEORGE SKELTON: A quiet, studious-looking man of about 40. Of scientific mind and practical in every way. Devoted to his wife, but does not feel that he should always be alluding to this as it is perfectly understood. Dark striped trousers and waistcoat, of brownish color. Slippers, oldish but not ragged or worn out, house coat — which has dark spots down front owing to his habit of wiping pens on it . MRS. GEORGE SKELTON: Very nice, attractive young woman of about 30, with a friendly and sympathetic face and manner. Always wanting to help people about their troubles. Well dressed but with entire modesty. No display of any kind. Her costume should be a street or walking dress for afternoon . CHARLES EDWARD PETTIBONE: A well-appearing man of business — age about 45. Heavy build but not fat. Breezy, big-voiced, sort of a fathead, who thinks only of business and pleasure. Well dressed. Wears business suit of dark color. Heavy watch-chain. Large pin in four-in-hand tie (not diamond pin) and general air of property and prosperity . BARBARA PETTIBONE: Pettibone's young wife. A very pretty, girlish young lady of 22 or so, charmingly and tastefully dressed for afternoon tea . AUGUSTUS MAPES: A dudish young man of slim build — age 25 or thereabout, and has on a stylish young-man suit for afternoon wear — something rather light in shade, and particular as to four-in-hand tie, pin, etc. Handkerchief up sleeve. Wrist watch, etc. Blond hair — and carefully brushed. A very quick change near end, while he is crossing at the back, to torn and ripped and soiled clothes of the same kind of suit as he had been wearing. Probably time only to change coat and waistcoat, tear off collar and tie and rumple hair, rub dirt on face, etc. MINNIE: Maid at Pettibone's. A very neat and nice young maid, in uniform to serve afternoon tea, etc.

SCENE: The drawing room of the Pettibones' house at Lemonhurst, Long Island .

It is about time for afternoon tea .

Drawing room at the Pettibones in Lemonhurst. Handsome room. Wide door at R. to library. Very wide opening up L.C. at back into the entrance hall, showing as much as possible of stairway in said hall. Fireplace on L. side, with mantel. Window down L. below fireplace. Handsome furniture — but most of it tricked to break .

Piano (baby grand) up R.C. Front to smash and keys to break loose and fly about. Inside piano has no instrument, but wires, etc., to tangle about anyone standing in it. Lid is lifted — but appearance of regular inside works is painted on thin wood (or) — to break through with crash when trodden on .

A table and chair L. of the piano, arranged like steps. A table with ornament R. of piano. A tea table up R.C.

Small table down L.C. to collapse in pieces on floor when struck with a chair. A small stand with vase below door to library. A lounge before the window and two fancy chairs at fireplace. And statuette on stand above fireplace. Also large lamp (electric) with shade for business of tangling up in the shade, etc. Vases, etc., on mantel — to smash. Also a clock — as ornamental as possible in appearance, but tricked to make a terribly whirring of clockwork, etc., when thrown and striking some object .

(At once after rise, enter MINNIE, L.C. from R., with tea things on large tray. All the china, etc., on this tray is to smash — therefore have it as easy to break as possible. Also it must look the part of a first class set. No tea or water or milk in the pots, etc. Have tea-cakes, toast, cakes, etc., very dry and hard, so that they will roll about . MINNIE sets tray on small table up R.C. near piano. While she is arranging it there, DOORBELL rings and she at once goes out L.C. to L. Sound of DOOR closing.)

(Enter SARAH SKELTON (MRS. GEORGE SKELTON) at door up L.C. from L. MINNIE follows her and stands just within the door . MRS. SKELTON moves quietly down toward C. and carries the impression during the following scene that she is overpowered — almost to difficulty in breathing — by some deep trouble.)

(BARBARA screams and faints . PETTIBONE and MRS. SKELTON call out, trying to stop them. A terrible time — knocking over tables, etc. Getting on the piano, which breaks in with them. Stamping about among the wires . GEORGE soon getting MAPES down among the wires — shuts lid and stands on it. Or if impossible, gets him down without lid. In that case leave lid open and have it opened wide and fall back in first wreckage scene before the fight.)

(ALL screaming and shouting to GEORGE during struggle — BARBARA reviving for the purpose. When GEORGE stands up on piano with MAPES inside (or down in the wires) PETTIBONE at last attracts his attention by wild shouts.)
