A little square just within the gate of the town of Habichtsburg. On the right, the castle, which incorporates a portion of the town walls. On the left, the inn of the Owl. Opposite it, a fountain which half hides the entrance to the church. At a table under the great linden-tree before the inn are discovered the Stranger , the Host , the Schoolmaster and various townspeople. Sunset; the sun shines through the town gate.
