[1,1 : Affe und Keil] asti kaścid vaṇijakaḥ | nagarasamīpe tena devatāyatanaṃ kriyate | tatra ye karmakārās sthapatyādayaḥ ! madhyāhnavelāyām āhāranimittaṃ bhojanamaṇḍapam anupraviṣṭāḥ | akasmāc cānuṣaṅgikaṃ devagṛhe vānarayūtham āgatam | atha tatraikasya śilpino 'rdhasphoṭitakāṣṭhastambho arjunamayaḥ khadirakīlakena madhye yantranikhātenāvastabdho avatiṣṭhate | tatra kadācid vānarayūtho giriśikharād avatīrya svecchayā taruśikharaprāsādaśṛṅgadārunicayeṣu prakrīḍitum ārabdhaḥ | ekas tu tatrāsannavināśaś cāpalād upaviśya stambhe yantracāram uddiśyedam āha | kenāyam asthāne kīlako nikhātaḥ | iti pāṇibhyām eva saṅgṛhyotpāṭitum ārabdhaḥ | sthānāc calite kīle yad vṛttam ! acintayac ca | kvāsāv āṣāḍhabhūtiḥ | nūnam ahaṃ tena muṣitaḥ | ity uktavān | vayaṃ cāṣāḍhabhūtineti | athāsau kapālaśakalagranthikāvaśeṣaḥ kañcid grāmam astaṃ gacchati ravau praviṣṭaḥ | praviśann ekāntavāsinaṃ tantravāyam apaśyat ! āvāsakaṃ ca prārthitavān | tenāpi tasyātmīyagṛhaikadeśe sthānaṃ nirdiśya bhāryā abhihitā | yāvad ahaṃ nagaraṃ gatvā suhṛtsameto madhupānaṃ krtvā āgacchāmi ! tāvad apramattayā gṛhe tvayā bhāvyam | ity ādiśya gataḥ | atha tasya bhāryā puṃścalī dūtikāsañcoditā śarīrasaṃskāraṃ kṛtvā paricitasakāśaṃ gantum ārabdhā | abhimukhaś cāsyā bhartā madavilopāsamāptākṣaravacanaḥ pariskhalitagatir avasrastavāsās samāyātaḥ | taṃ ca dṛṣṭvā pratyutpannamatiḥ kauśalād ākalpam apanīya pūrvaprakṛtam eva veṣam āsthāya pādaśaucaśayanādyārambham akarot | kaulikas tu gṛhaṃ praviśya nidrāvaśam agamat | suptapratibuddhaś cāsau tām ākroṣṭum ārabdhaḥ | puṃścali ! tvadgatam apacāraṃ suhṛdo me varṇayanti | bhavatu | puṣṭaṃ nigrahaṃ kariṣyāmīti | asāv api nirmaryādā prativacanaṃ dātum ārabdhā | punar api cāsau pratibuddhas tāṃ madhyastūṇāyāṃ rajjvā supratibaddhāṃ kṛtvā prasuptaḥ | dūtikaitāṃ punar gamanāya pracoditavatī | sā tūtpannapratibhā dūtikām ātmīyadarśanasaṃvidhānena baddhvā kāmukasakāśaṃ yayau | asāv api pratibuddhas tathaiva tām ākroṣṭum ārabdhaḥ | dūtikā tu śaṅkitahṛdayānucitavākyodāharaṇabhītā na kiñcid uktavatī | tantravāyas tu śāṭhyād iyaṃ na kiñcin mamottaraṃ prayacchati ity utthāya tasyās tīkṣṇaśastreṇa nāsikāṃ chittvābravīt | tiṣṭhaivaṃlakṣaṇā | kas tvām adhunā vārttāṃ pṛcchati | ity uktvā nidrāvaśam upāgamat | āgatā ca sā tantravāyī dūtikām apṛcchat | kā te vārttā | kim ayaṃ pratibuddho 'bhihitavān | kathaya kathayeti | dūtikā tu kṛtanigrahā nāsikāṃ darśayantī sāmarṣam āha | śivās te sarvā vārttāḥ | muñca | gacchāmīti | tathā tv anuṣṭhite nāsikām ādāyāpakrāntā | tantravāyy- apy kṛtakabaddham ātmānaṃ tathaivākarot | kaulikas tu yathāpūrvam eva pratibuddhas tām ākrośat | asāv api duṣṭā bahu dhṛṣṭaram āha | dhigghato 'si | ko māṃ nirāgasaṃ virūpayituṃ samarthaḥ | śṛṇvantu me lokapālāḥ | yathāhaṃ kaumāraṃ bhartāraṃ muktvā nānyaṃ parapuruṣaṃ manasāpi vedmi ! tathā mamānena satyenāvyaṅgyaṃ mukham astv iti | athāsau mūrkhaḥ kṛtakavacanavyāmohitacittaḥ prajvālyolkām avyaṅgamukhīṃ jāyāṃ dṛṣṭvā protphullanayanaḥ paricumbya hṛṣṭamanā bandhavād avamucya pīḍitaṃ ca pariṣvajya śayyām āropitavān | parivrājakas tv ādita evārabhya yathāvṛttam artham abhijñātavān | dūtikāpi hastakṛtanāsāpuṭā svagṛhaṃ gatvācintayat | kim adhunā kartavyam iti | atha tasyā bhartā nāpito rājakulāt pratyūṣasy āgatya tāṃ bhāryām āha | samarpaya ! bhadre ! kṣurabhāṇḍam | rājakule karma kartavyam iti | sā ca duṣṭābhyantarasthaiva kṣuram eva prāhiṇot | sa ca samastakṣurabhāṇḍāsamarpaṇāt krodhāviṣṭacitto nāpitas tam eva tasyāḥ kṣuraṃ pratīpaṃ prāhiṇot | athāsāv ārtaravam ucchaiḥ kṛtvā pāṇinā nāsāpuṭaṃ pramṛjya asṛkpātasametāṃ nāsikāṃ kṣitau prakṣipyābravīt | paritrāyadhvam ! paritrāyadhvam | anenāham adṛṣṭadoṣā virūpiteti | tathābhyāgatai rājapuruṣaiḥ pratyakṣadarśanāṃ tāṃ dṛṣṭvā virūpāṃ kīlapārṣṇilaguḍair atīva hataṃ paścād bāhubandhaś ca tayā saha dharmasthānam upanīto nāpitaḥ | pṛcchyamānaś cādhikṛtaiḥ kim idaṃ mahad viśasanaṃ svadāreṣu tvayā kṛtam iti yadā bahuśa ucyamāno nottaraṃ prayacchati ! tadā dharmādhikṛtāś śūle 'vataṃsyatām ity ājñāpitavantaḥ | niṣpāpaṃ ca parivrāṭ cchūlasthānaṃ nīyamānaṃ nāpitaṃ dṛṣṭvā sattvānukampayā copalabdhatattvārtho 'dhikaraṇam upagamya dharmasthānādhikṛtān abravīt | nārhathainam adoṣakartāraṃ nāpitaṃ śūle samāropayitum | yatkāraṇam ! kena kāraṇena | bakaḥ | adya matsyabandhair etatsarassamīpenātikrāmadbhir abhihitam | bahumatsyo 'yaṃ hradaḥ | asmiñ jālaṃ prakṣipāmaḥ | nagarasamipe 'nye hradā anāsāditāḥ | tān āsādya punar āgamiṣyāma iti kathayām āsuḥ | tat ! bhadra ! vinaṣṭā nāma yūyam | aham api vṛtticchedād utsanna eva | tatas tair vijñaptaḥ ! yathā | yataivāpāyaś śrūyate ! tata evopāyo 'pi labhyate | tad arhasy asmān paritrātum | bakaḥ | aṇḍajo 'ham asamartho mānuṣavirodhe | kintv asmād dhradād anyaṃ jalāśayaṃ yuṣmān saṅkrāmayiṣyāmi | tatas tair viśvāsam upagatais tāta ! bhrātar ! mātula ! mātula ! māṃ naya ! māṃ naya ! prathamataraṃ nayasvety abhihitam | asāv api duṣṭamatiḥ krameṇa nītvā kauśalād ajasraṃ tān bhakṣayan paraṃ paritoṣam upāgataḥ | kulīrakas tu mṛtyubhayodvigno muhur muhus taṃ prārthitavān | māma ! mām api tāvad arhasi mṛtyumukhāt paritrātum iti | sa tu duṣṭātmācintayat | nirviṇṇo 'smy anenaikarasena matsyapiśitena | enam api tāvad rasaviśeṣam āsvādayiṣyāmi | tatas samutkṣipya viyat sarvāmbhassthānāni parihṛtyaikadeśe taptaśilāyām avatīrṇaḥ | kulīrako 'pi pūrvabhakṣitamatsyaśarīrāvayavarāśiṃ dṛṣṭvā evācintayat | nihatā anena durātmanā prajñāpūrvakaṃ te mīnāḥ | tat kim adhunā prāptakālam | athavā | [ abhiyukto yadā paśyen na kāñcid gatim ātmanaḥ | yudhyamānas tadā prājño mriyeta ripuṇā saha ||61|| ] anabhijño 'pi bakaḥ kulīrakasandaṃśagrahasya maurkhyāt kulīrakasakāśāc chiraśchedam avāpnavān | kulīrako 'pi gṛhītvā bakagrīvām utpalanālavad ākāśagamanaprasādhitacihnamārgo matsyāntikam eva prāyāt | taiś cābhihitaḥ | bhrātaḥ ! kvāsau māma iti | athāsāv abravīt | pañcatvam upagataḥ | tasyaitad durātmanaś śiraḥ | bhakṣitās tenopadhinā bahavas svayūthyā vaḥ | so 'pi matsakāśād vinaṣṭa iti | ato 'haṃ bravīmi | bhakṣayitvā bahūn matsyān iti | atha vāyaso jambukam āha | āvayoḥ kiṃ prāptakālaṃ manyase | gomāyuḥ | suvarṇasūtram ādāyātrāvāsake sthāpyatām | asaṃśayaṃ tatsvāmī taṃ kṛṣṇasarpaṃ ghātayiṣyati | ity uktvā sa sṛgālo 'pakrāntaḥ | atha vāyasas suvarṇasūtrānveṣī rājagṛhaṃ prāyāt | dṛṣṭaṃ ca tenāntaḥpuraikadeśe dhautavastrayugalopari suvarṇasūtram uttamamaṇiviracitaṃ mahārhaṃ prakṣālya ceṭikayā sthāpitam | tac cāvasthāpyānyayā saha kathāṃ kartum ārabdhā | vāyasas tu tad gṛhītvā viyatā śanair ātmānaṃ darśayan svam ālayaṃ prati prāyāt | athārakṣipuruṣaiḥ prāsamudgaratomarapāṇibhir mahatā javena gatvā vṛkṣo 'valokitaḥ ! yāvat tena tat svanīḍe sthāpitam | tatraikenārohatā dṛṣṭam ! kṛṣṇabhujaṅgo vāyasapotān bhakṣayitvā nidrāvaśam agamat | tena cāsau supta eva ghātitaḥ | tat kṛtvā suvarṇasūtram ādāya gata iti | [1,6 Löwe und Hase] asti ! tavāpy āhārasyābhāvaḥ | tad ubhayopadravaḥ | tat prasida | vayaṃ tu svāmina ekaikaṃ vanacaraṃ vāreṇa svajātisamutthaṃ preṣayāmaḥ | tathā kṛte kālaparyayāc chaśakasya vāro 'bhyāgataḥ | sa tu sarvamṛgājñāpito ruṣitamanāś cintayām āsa | antakaro 'yaṃ mṛtyumukhapraveśaḥ | kim adhunā prāptakālaṃ mameti | athavā buddhimatāṃ kim aśakyam | aham evopāyena vyāpādayāmi siṃham | iti tasyāhāravelāṃ kṣapayitvā gataḥ | asāv api kṣutkṣāmakaṇṭhaḥ krodhasaṃraktanayanas sphuradvadanadaśanasaṅgharṣadaṃṣṭrākarālo lāṅgūlāsphālanākārabhayakṛt tam āha | sukruddhair api kiṃ kriyate 'nyatra prāṇaviyogāt | sa tvam adya gatāsur eva | ko 'yaṃ tava velātyayaḥ | śaśakaḥ | na mamātmavaśasyātikrāntā ! svāmin ! āhāravelā | siṃhaḥ | kena vidhṛto 'si | śaśaḥ | siṃheneti | tac chrutvā paramodvignahṛdayas siṃho 'bravīt | katham anyo 'tra madbhujaparirakṣite vane siṃha iti | śaśo bāḍham ity āha | atha siṃho vyacintayat | kim anena hatena kāraṇaṃ mama | taṃ sapatnaṃ sandarśayiṣyatīti | taṃ ca vyāpādyainaṃ bhakṣayiṣyāmi | iti tam āha | mama taṃ durātmānaṃ darśayasveti | asāv api śaśo 'ntarlīnam avahasya bṛhaspatyuśanasor nītiśāstraṃ pramāṇīkṛtya svārthasiddhaye vimalajalasaṃpannaṃ dvipuruṣaprāpyodakam iṣṭakācitaṃ mahāntaṃ kūpam adarśayat | asāv apy ātmakāyapratibimbānabhijñatayā kumārgāpannacitto 'yam asau sapatna iti matvā sahasaiva tasya upari sannipatito maurkhyāt pañcatvam agamat | [1,7 Laus und Floh] asti kasyacid rājñas sarvaguṇopetam ananyasadṛśaṃ śayanam | tasmin pracchadapaṭaikadeśe mandavisarpiṇī nāma yūkā prativasati sma | atha tasmiṃṣ ṭiṇṭibho nāma matkuṇo vāyunā preritas sannipatitaḥ | sa tu tac chayanam atisūkṣmottaracchadam ubhayopadhānaṃ jāhnavīpulinavipulaṃ paramamṛdu surabhi ca dṛṣṭvā paraṃ paritoṣam upagataḥ | tatsparśākṛṣṭamanā itaś cetaḥ paribhraman katham api tayā mandavisarpiṇyā sametaḥ | tayābhihitaḥ | kutas tvam asminn ayogyādhivāsa āgataḥ | apagamyatām asmād iti | matkuṇaḥ | ārye ! mayā tāvad ihānekaprakārāṇi māṃsāny āsvāditāni brāhmaṇakṣatriyaviṭchūdrāntassthāni rudhirāṇi ca | tāni tu rūkṣāṇi picchilāny atuṣṭikarāṇy amanojñāni | yaḥ punar asya śayanasyādhiṣṭhātā ! tasya manoramam amṛtopamam asṛg bhaviṣyati | ajasraṃ bhiṣagbhiḥ prayatnād auṣadhādyupakramād vātapittaśleṣmanirodhād anāmayatayā snigdhapeśaladravais sakhaṇḍaguḍadāḍimatrikaṭukapaṭubhis sthalajajalajakhecarabalavatpradhānapiśitopabrṃhitair āhārair upacitaṃ rudhiraṃ rasāyanam iva manye | tac ca surabhi puṣṭikaraṃ cecchāmy ahaṃ tvatprasādād āsvādayitum iti | ato 'sau mandavisarpiṇy- āha | asambhāvyam etat tvadvidhānām agnimukhānāṃ daṃśavṛttīnām | apagamyatām asmāc chayanāt | tato 'sau tasyāḥ pādayor nipatitaḥ | sā tu dākṣiṇyāt tathā nāmeti pratipannā | kintu naivākāle na cātimṛdubhāge tvayāsya prahartavyam iti | so 'bravīt | ko 'sya kālaḥ | anabhijño 'ham aparicitatvāt | sā tv akathayat | madhupānaśramāgatanidrasya rativilāsanirbharasuptasya ca śanair mṛdutayā bhavatā vicāraṇīyam | madaśramanidrāparītakāyo nāśu prabudhyataeiti | evam avasthāpite prathamapradoṣae evākālajñena daṣṭaḥ | asāv api parthiva ulmukadagdha iva saṃlīnakukṣipradeśas sasambhramam utthāyāha | aho ! daṣṭo 'smi kenāpi | atha matkuṇaś cakitatvād rājavacanaṃ śrutvā śayanād avatīrya anyad vivaram āśritaḥ | śayyāpālair api svāmyādeśāt sunipuṇam anviṣadbhir vastraṃ parivartayadbhir antarlīnā mandavisarpiṇī samāsāditā vyāpāditā ca | [1,8 Der blaue Schakal] asti kasmiṃścin nagarasamīpe sannikṛṣṭavivarābhyantaraśāyī jambukaś caṇḍaravo nāma | sa kadācid āhāram anveṣamāṇaḥ kṣapām āsādya kṣutkṣāmagalas sammīlitalocanaḥ paribhraman nagaraṃ praviṣṭaḥ | tannagaravāsibhiś ca sārameyais tīkṣṇadaśanakoṭivilupyamānāvayavo bhayabhairavaphetkāraravapūritadigvivara itas tataḥ praskhalan palāyamānaḥ kasmiṃścid ajñānān nīlīkalaśe sannipatitaḥ | śvagaṇaś ca yathāgataṃ prāyāt | asāv api kṛcchreṇāyuśśeṣatayāsmān nīlīkalaśāt samuttasthau | athāsya taccharīraṃ nīlīrasarañjitaṃ dṛṣṭvā samīpavartinaḥ kroṣṭukagaṇāḥ ko 'yam iti bhayataraladṛśas sarvā diśaḥ pradudruvuḥ | asāv apy acintayat | nūnam imāṃ svarūpavikṛtiṃ dṛṣṭvaite palāyantae iti | atha dhīracittas tāṃś chanair avādīt | alaṃ sambhrameṇa | aham ākhaṇḍalājñayā sakalaśvāpadakulapālanakṣamaḥ kṣititalam āgata iti | atha tadvacanam ākarṇya siṃhavyāghracitrakavānaraśaśahariṇavṛṣadaṃśajambukā dayaś śvāpadagaṇās taṃ praṇemuḥ | pratidinaṃ ca kesarikarajakuliśadāritamattebhapiśitair āpūryamāṇakukṣiḥ kakṣam iva taṃ jambukapūgaṃ bahiḥ kṛtvā siṃhavyāghrādīn āsannavartinaś cakāra | ekadā tv asau vividhapiśitanāśitakṣud dikṣu sthitānāṃ kroṣṭukānāṃ krośatāṃ ninādaṃ śrutvā tvaritataram uccair ninanāda | atas te siṃhādayas trapayā bhūbhāgadṛṣṭibhājaḥ kaṣṭam aho ! vañcitās smaḥ ! kroṣṭāyam ity avadhārya ruṣā taṃ paruṣagiraṃ nāśitavanta iti | [1,9 Kamel, Löwe, Panther, Krähe und Schakal] asti ! kasmiṃścid vanoddeśe madotkaṭo nāma siṃhaḥ prativasati sma | tasyānucarās trayaḥ piśitāśino dvīpivāyasagomāyavaḥ | atha tair bhramadbhir dṛṣṭas sārthavāhaparibhraṣṭa uṣṭraḥ | taṃ cājñātapūrvarūpaṃ hāsyajananaṃ dṛṣṭvā siṃhaḥ pṛṣṭavān | idam apūrvaṃ sattvam iha vane pṛcchyatām | kas tvam iti | tato 'vagatatattvārtho vāyaso 'bravīt | ākhyātanāmoṣṭro 'yam iti | tatas tena siṃhasakāśaṃ viśvāsyānītaḥ | tenāpi yathāvṛttam ātmano viyogas sārthavāhāt samākhyātaḥ | siṃhena cāsyābhyavapattir abhayapradānaṃ ca dattam | evaṃ ca vartamāne kadācit siṃho vanyagajayuddharadanakṣataśarīro guhāvāsī saṃvṛttaḥ | pañcaṣaḍdivasātikrānte ca kāle sarvae eva tae āhāravaikalyād ātyayikam āpatitāḥ | yato 'vasannāḥ ! tatas siṃhenābhihitāḥ | aham anayā rujā na kṣamaḥ pūrvavad āhāraṃ bhavatām utpādayitum | te yūyam ātmārthe 'pi tāvad abhyudgamaṃ kuruta | te tam āhuḥ | evaṃ gate kim asmākam ātmapuṣṭyartheneti | siṃhaḥ | sādhv anujīvivṛttaṃ madupari bhaktiś ca bhavatām | atiśobhanam abhihitam | śaktā bhavantaḥ ! sarujaś cāham | tan mamaitadavasthasyopanayatāhāram iti | yadā ca na kiñcid ūcuḥ ! tadā tenābhihitāḥ | kim anayā vrīḍayā | anviṣyatāṃ kiñcit sattvam | aham etadavastho 'pi yuṣmākam ātmanaś cotpādayiṣye prāṇayātrārtham iti | evam uktvā te 'py utthāya saha krathanakena vanāntaraṃ praviṣṭāḥ | vyudasya krathanakaṃ duṣṭamantram ārabdhāḥ | tatra vāyasa āha | vināśitā vayam anena svāminā svādhīne 'py arthe | tāv āhatuḥ | katham | so 'bravīt | nanv ayaṃ krathanaka iti | tae āhuḥ | ayam asmākaṃ viśvāsopagataśaraṇāgato vayasyatve 'nujñātaḥ | sa āha | śaṣpabhujaḥ piśitāśinaś ca viṣamasambandhāḥ | tatas tāv ūcatuḥ | svāmināyam abhayapradānena rakṣyate | tena cāyuktam aśakyaṃ caitad iti | punar api vāyaso 'bravīt | tiṣṭhata yūyaṃ yāvad aham evaitad arthaṃ sampratipādayiṣyāmi | ity uktvā siṃhasakāśam agamat | siṃhena cābhihitam | anviṣṭaṃ yuṣmābhiḥ kiñcit sattvam iti | kākaḥ | yasya cakṣur balaṃ vā syāt ! yathā śreyasām arthe pāpīyān ārambhaḥ | api coktam | [ tyajed ekaṃ kulasyārthe grāmasyārthe kulaṃ tyajet | grāmaṃ janapadasyārthe svātmārthe pṛthivīṃ tyajet ||118|| ] punaś cāha | mā svāmī svayaṃ vyāpādayatu | mayāsyopadhinā vadha ārabdhaḥ | siṃhaḥ | katham iva | kākaḥ | ayaṃ tāvad etadavasthaṃ svāminam asmāṃś ca dṛṣṭvā svayam ātmānam anyapuṣṭyarthaṃ svargagamanāya sattvahitāya nivedayati | evam abhihitavati vāyase siṃho matibhramam ivārpito na kiñcid apy udāhṛtavān | asāv api punas tatsakāśaṃ gatvā kṛtakavacanaiḥ pratyekaṃ vijñāpitavān | siṃhāntikaṃ gatair yuṣmābhir evaṃ vaktavyam iti | tataḥ kṛtasaṃvidas saha krathanakena siṃhasakāśaṃ gatāḥ | atha vāyasaḥ praṇamya siṃhaṃ vijñāpitavān | deva ! svāmiśarīraṃ sarvathā rakṣyam asmaccharīreṇeti | athāsāv āha | akalpakāyo bhavān | na yuṣmaccharīropabhoge kṛte 'py asmākaṃ kiñcit tṛptikāraṇaṃ bhavati | tasmiṃś cāpayāte gomāyur abhihitavān | asmān mama viśiṣṭataraṃ śarīram | tan matprāṇaiḥ kriyatāṃ prāṇayātreti | tam api tathaivābhihitavān | apayāte ca tasmin dvīpy- āha | ābhyāṃ mama viśiṣṭataraṃ śarīram idam upayujyatām iti | tam apy asāv āha | akalpakāyo bhavān apīti | tac chrutvā krathanako 'cintayat | naivātra kaś cid vināśyate | tad aham apy evam eva bravīmi | tata utthāya siṃhāntikam upagamyābravīt | deva ! tato mām apy asmān mṛtyumukhāt trātum arhathaḥ | yatkāraṇam ! yuvayos tāvad āhāravaikalyaṃ kevalam asmin svalpodake sarasi ! mamātra tu maraṇam eva | tad vicintyatām ! āhārasuhṛdviyogayoḥ ko garīyān | tābhyām abhihitam | yuktam āttha | evam etat | kiṃ punaḥ prāptakālaṃ bhavāñ jānāti | avaśyaṃ nayāvāvāṃ bhavantam | tvayā punaś cāpalān na kiñcid vaktavyam | imāṃ tu yaṣṭiṃ madhye daśanair āpīḍaya | evam anayaivoddhṛtya ṣaṣṭimātrāṇi yojanāni mahat saro bhavantaṃ nayāvaḥ | tatra sukhaṃ yāpayiṣyāma iti | evaṃ ca niṣpanne tajjalāśayasannikṛṣṭanagarasyopariṣṭān nīyamānaṃ dṛṣṭvā ! kim idaṃ śakaṭacakrapramāṇaṃ viyatā nīyatae iti janas sakalakalas samvṛttaḥ | tac ca śrutvāsannavināśaḥ kacchapo yaṣṭiṃ tyaktvābhihitavān | ahaṃ kacchapaḥ | cāpalād eṣa lokaḥ pralapati ! iti bruvan vacanasamakālam evāśrayāt paribhraṣṭo bhūmau nipatitaḥ ! māṃsārthinā ca lokena pātasamakālam eva tīkṣṇaśastraiḥ khaṇḍaśo vibhakta iti | [1,12 Die drei Fische] asti ! kasmiṃścin mahāhrade mahākāyās trayo matsyāḥ prativasanti sma ! tad yathā | anāgatavidhātā pratyutpannamatir yadbhaviṣyaś ceti | tatrānāgatavidhātrā tadudakāntargatena kadācit tatsamīpe matsyabandhānām atikrāmatāṃ vacanaṃ śrutam | bahumatsyo 'yaṃ hradaḥ | atra matsyabandhaṃ kurmaḥ | tac ca śrutvānāgatavidhātrā cintitam | avaśyam etae āgantāraḥ | tad ahaṃ pratyutpannamatiṃ yadbhaviṣyaṃ ca gṛhītvānyam acchinnasrotaskaṃ hradaṃ saṃśrayāmīti | tatas tāv āhūya pṛṣṭavān gamanāya | tatra pratyutpannamatir matinivārito 'bhayacittaḥ katham api pramādān nānuyātaḥ | yadbhaviṣyas tv āsannavināśas tadvacanam anādṛtya nirārambha eva āsīt | anyedyuś cāpayāte 'nāgatavidhātari matsyabandhair antassroto nirudhya prakṣiptaṃ samvartajālam | apakṛṣṭe ca jāle tasmin hrade nāpy ekataro 'vaśiṣṭaḥ | evaṃ gate pratyutpannamatir mṛtarūpaṃ kṛtvātmānaṃ jalasya upari darśitavān | tair api svayam eva mṛto mahāmatsya iti kṛtvā parisrotasi sthāpitaḥ | tasmād utplutyānyaṃ jalāśayaṃ gataḥ | yadbhaviṣyas tv anekalaguḍaprahārajarjaritaśarīraḥ pañcatvam upanīta iti | ato 'haṃ bravīmi | anāgatavidhātā ceti | atha kadācit prasūtāyāṃ ṭīṭibhyāṃ tadbhartṛjijñāsayā samudreṇa apahṛtās te 'ṇḍakāḥ ! paśyāmi tāvat ! ayaṃ kim ārambhatae iti | atha ṭīṭibhī śūnyam apatyasthānaṃ dṛṣṭvā paramāvignahṛdayā bhartāram āha | idaṃ tad āpatitaṃ mandabhāgyāyāḥ | asāv antarlīnam avahasya tām āha | mamāpi tāvat ! bhadre ! dṛśyatāṃ sāmarthyam iti | tatas tena pakṣisamājaṃ kṛtvā niveditaṃ tadapatyaharaṇajaṃ duḥkham | tatraikenābhihitam | asamarthā vayaṃ mahodadhivigrahāya | kiṃ punar atra prāptakālam | sarvae eva vayam ākrandena garutmantam udvejayāmaḥ | saiva no duḥkham apaneṣyati | ity avadhārya tatsakāśaṃ gatāḥ | asāv api devāsuraraṇanimittam āhūto viṣṇunā garuḍas tat svayūthyavyasanaṃ dṛṣṭvā manyum ājagāma | devo 'pi viṣṇus traikālyadarśanasāmakṣyāt tasyāntargataṃ matvā svayam eva tatsakāśam agamat | atha devaṃ dṛṣṭvā sutarām āvignahṛdayo 'bravīt | yuktaṃ tvayā nāthena satā samudrāpasadān mamāyaṃ paribhava iti | jñātvā ca devaḥ parihasya samudrasyedam uvāca | samarpayādhunāpatyāni ṭīṭibhasyeti | anyathā tvām āgneyāstrapratāpitam anekavaḍavāmukhasahasraparikṣīṇatoyaṃ sadyaḥ kariṣyāmīti | evam ukto mahodadhiś cintayām āsa | mamāṇḍajena sarvanāśa eva prārabdhaḥ | iti matvā praṇamya devaṃ samarpitavān iti | [1,13 Der listige Schakal] asti ! yenāham etadavastho 'pi bhavatāṃ vṛttim āpādayiṣyāmi | atha tadājñāsamakālam eva te 'raṇye paryaṭanto yadā na kiñcid āseduḥ ! tadāsau jambukas taṃ śaṅkukarṇanāmānaṃ karabhaṃ vivikte 'bhihitavān | kim atra prāptakālaṃ manyate bhavān | svāmī vajradanto 'smadīyaparyaṭanam anarthakaṃ śrutvā kadācid vināśāya pravartate | tad ahaṃ kiñcid bhavataḥ prārthaye ! yadi pratīcchasīti | sa āha | kiṃ mamāsti ! vayasya ! yat prārthyate | śarīram api me tvadāyattam | yathābhimatam upayujyatām iti | atha jambuko 'bravīt | etad evātra kāraṇam | ahaṃ te dviguṇaṃ śarīraṃ siṃhasakāśād dāpayiṣye | tvayāpy evaṃ vayam ātmā ca saṃvardhitās syur iti | pratipannaś cāsau | evam abhidhāya siṃhasakāśaṃ gatvā tam āha | svāmin ! na kiñcit sattvam āsāditam | eṣa punaś śaṅkukarṇo 'bhidhatte | bṛhatprasthena dviguṇayā tulayojjāsyaṃ śarīraṃ samprayacchāmi iti | tac chrutvā siṃhaḥ prahṛṣṭa āha | evaṃ kriyatām | atha pratipanne śaṅkukarṇaḥ papāta bhūmau ! khaṇḍaśaś ca kṛtaḥ | tataś caturakas taṃ siṃhaṃ rudhiraraktasarvagātraṃ dṛṣṭvā abravīt | gacchatu svāmī snānam ācaritum ! yāvad ahaṃ kravyamukhasahitas tiṣṭhāmi | gate ca tasmiṃś caturakas taṃ kravyamukham āha | bhakṣaya tāvad ataḥ piśitam ! yāvad asau snātuṃ gataḥ | so 'bravīt | bhakṣayitvā kim uttaraṃ dāsyāmi | jambuko 'bravīt | kiṃ tavānena vicāreṇa | aham etasya prativacanaṃ dāsyāmi | tvayā punar mama mukham evāvalokitavyam iti | evam ukte tābhyāṃ kravyam atibahu bhakṣitam | atrāntare siṃhas samprāpto yāvat paśyati sakalaṃ jaṭharapiśitam upabhuktam ! tataś caturakam āha | māma ! kva taj jatharapiśitam | evaṃ vadati siṃhe kravyamukho mukhaṃ caturakasyāvalokitavān | caturako 'bravīt | kim adhunā manmukham avalokayasi | svāmin | bhakṣitam aneneti | atha siṃhaḥ kuliśakharanakaro bhrūkuṭilamukhaḥ prakaṭitaroṣas taṃ hantum aicchat | athāsāv api vṛko mukhavaivarṇyavepathuvyāptatanur atanupadavikṣepaḥ kṣiprapalāyanapaṭur aṭavīm uddiśya jagāma | siṃho 'pi kiñcid anusṛtya pratinivṛttaḥ | etasmiṃś cāntare kathamapi ca tatsamīpam atha kaścit sārthavāho anena pathāyātaḥ | tasya ca sārthāgresaraṃ kaṭāhena galabaddhena karabham āgacchantaṃ dṛṣṭvā kṛtakaviṣādo jambukas taṃ siṃham āha | deva ! vinaṣṭāv āvām | mā khalu kaścid vanaṃ dhārayatu | yāvad adyāpi piśitaṃ nopabhujyate ! tāvad bṛhatprastham ādāya dhanikācāreṇāyaṃ karabhakas samprāptaḥ | tat kim atra prāptakālam | gacchatu svāmī digantaram anyat ! vittaśeṣo yāvad āvayos sāmānyaḥ ! tāvad avicchinnas snehasadbhāvaḥ | kintv ekam ekaṃ śataṃ gṛhītvā praviśāvaḥ | yatkāraṇam ! puṇyaparīkṣā hrāsavṛddhibhyāṃ bhaviṣyaty ekārthatā ca janaspṛhaṇīyā | tathā cānuṣṭhite śeṣaṃ kutracit suguptaṃ kṛtvā praviṣṭau | atha tadvarṣābhyantare duṣṭabuddhir asadvyayavyasanitvād bhāgyacchidratayā ca kṣīṇapratyaṃśaḥ punar api ca nidhito dharmabuddhinā sahāparaśataṃ vibhaktavān | tad api dvitīyavarṣābhyantare tathaiva kṣīṇam | evaṃ gate duṣṭabuddhiś cintayām āsa | yadi punaś śatavibhāgena vibhajāvaḥ ! tat kiṃ mayā kṛtaṃ bhavati | śeṣaiṣ ṣaḍbhir apahṛtais samastāny evāsādayāmi | evaṃ matvaikākī bhūtvā tām arthamātrām apanīya pradeśaṃ samīkṛtya māsātikrānte kāle dharmabuddhim abhihitavān | bhadra ! samavibhāgaṃ śeṣavittasya kurva iti | pratipanne ca dharmabuddhinā saha gatvā tam evoddeśaṃ khātakarma kartum ārabdhaḥ | khanyamāne ca yadā na dṛśyate ! tadā prathamataraṃ dhṛṣṭatayā duṣṭabuddhiḥ pāṣāṇenātmanaś śiro 'tāḍayad abravīc ca sasambhramam | kva tad brahmahṛdayam ! dharmabuddhe | nūnaṃ tvayāpahṛtam iti | evaṃ parasparaśaṅkayā vivadamānau dharmasthānam upāgatau | āvedite ca tasminn arthe 'vagate 'vyaktavyavahāraduśchedatayā sanniruddhau | pañcarātrābhyantarāc ca duṣṭabuddhinādhikṛtānāṃ pratijñātam | sākṣiṇo mama santy atravyavahāradīnārāṇām iti | tais tu vyavahāranivartanārthaṃ pṛṣṭaḥ | kas te sākṣī | darśayasveti | so 'bravīt | yasyaiva vṛkṣasyādhastāt sthāpitaṃ dravyam ! tenaiva vibhāvayāmi iti | atha te vismayam upagatāḥ ! kathaṃ vanaspatir mantrayiṣyatīti | kṛtapratibhuvau svagṛhaṃ visarjitau | atha duṣṭabuddhinā svagṛhaṃ gatena pitābhihitaḥ | tāta ! maddhastagatās te paṇāḥ | kintu vāṅmātrāvabaddhās tiṣṭhanti | ahaṃ tu tvām adya rātrau vṛkṣavivare 'smin sthāpayāmi | prabhāte dharmādhikṛtasamakṣaṃ pṛṣṭas taṃ vibhāvayeti | tatas tenābhihitam | putra ! kim adyāpy āhāro anuṣṭhīyatae iti | bakaḥ | adhṛtiparītasya me kuta āhārābhilāṣa iti | yato 'sāv āha | kiṃlakṣaṇasamutthādhṛtiḥ | sa tu tasmai yathāvṛttam apatyabhakṣaṇam ākhyātavān | kulīrakas tu taṃ samarthitavān | aham upāyaṃ tadvadhāya kathayāmi | yeyaṃ nakulavasatir etatprabhṛtyavicchinnaparamparayā matsyapiśitaṃ prakīryatām ! yāvatsarpavasatiḥ | tatas tae evainaṃ ghātayiṣyanti | tathā cānuṣṭhite nakulaiḥ piśitamārgānusāribhiḥ pūrvavairakriyām anusmaradbhiḥ khaṇḍaśo 'hiṃ kurvadbhiḥ pūrvadṛṣṭamārgam ādhāvadbhir bakāvāsaṃ gatvā bakasya śeṣāpatyabhakṣaṇaṃ kṛtam iti | [1,15] ato 'haṃ bravīmi | upāyaṃ cintayet prājño hy apāyam api cintayet | iti bruvann api tenāsau nītvā sthāpito vṛkṣavivare | atha prabhātasamaye 'dhikaraṇaprakṛtipratyakṣaṃ dharmaśāstravacanābhiśrāvitena vanaspatinā yathāprastutam abhihitam | dharmabuddhinārtho 'pahṛta iti | tac ca śrutvā dharmabuddiś cintayām āsa | katham avāk pādapo vācaṃ vyāhariṣyati | tat kāraṇenātra bhavitavyam | sarvathā buddhisādhyam etat | atha dharmasthānīyān āha | aho vismayaḥ | adyāpy aviplutae eva loke dharmabuddir ahaṃ vijane 'smin vanae ekāky- āgamya tad dravyaṃ gṛhītavān | athāpaśyam ahim atikāyam āyāntam | cintitaṃ ca mayā | kaṣṭam idam āpatitam | abhihitaṃ ca | punar api viṣayā labhyante ! na tu prāṇāḥ | punar āgamiṣyāmi | ity atraiva vṛkṣamūle 'vasthāpitam | adhunāvaśyaṃ rājavaśāt samarpitavyam | kintv asmāt sthānād ekānte 'vasthānaṃ kurudhvam ! yāvad aham enaṃ nidhipālaṃ kṛṣṇasarpaṃ parājayāmi | ity uktvāhāryaiś śuṣkadāruparṇanicayair vṛkṣavivaram āpūryāgnim ādīpayitum ārabdhaḥ | duṣṭabuddhis tv adhomukhenākṣṇā vilokya vṛkṣavivarāntargataṃ vaṇikputraṃ dṛṣṭvā vyathitamanā abhavat | pradīpte ca vahnau samantata ujjvalībhūtād vṛkṣavivarāt sphaṭitatanuḥ pluṣṭakeśas srastatvag yadā jāto vaṇik ! tadā bhūmau nipatitaḥ | tat tu mahad vaikārikaṃ dṛṣṭvā kim idam iti paraṃ vismayam upagatāḥ | kiñcij jīvitaṃ ca pratyakṣam abhijñāya vaṇikputraṃ papracchuḥ | kim idam īdṛśam agnipatanam adhyavasitaṃ bhavateti | tato 'sāv abravīt | anena duṣputreṇāham avasthām imāṃ prāpita iti | evam abhivadan pañcatvam upagataḥ | anantaraṃ dharmādhikṛtās tam arthaṃ jñātvābhihitavantaḥ | duṣṭabuddhir ayaṃ pāpaś śūle 'vataṃsyatām iti | [1,17] asti kasmiṃścid adhiṣṭhāne kṣīṇabāndhavo vaṇiksutaḥ | sa deśāntaram arthopārjananimittaṃ prasthitaḥ | tasya tulā lohasahasrakṛtā vidyate | so 'nyasmin vaṇikputrake tāṃ nikṣipya deśāntaram arthopārjanāya prāyāt | kṣīṇabhāgyatvāc ca tena bahunāpi kālena na kiñcid āsāditam | pratyāgataś ca tāṃ tulāṃ tasmāt prārthitavān | tenoktaṃ ca | sā mūṣakair bhakṣiteti | athāsāv acintayat | vismayanīyam etat | kathaṃ lohasahasramayīṃ tulāṃ mūṣakā bhakṣayiṣyantīti | antarlīnam avahasyābravīt ! avaśyam etad evam ! yatkāraṇam | vṛṣyaṃ svādu mṛdu ca lohaṃ katham ākhavo na bhakṣayiṣyanti ! iti pratipannavāk | asāv api suparihṛṣṭahṛdayaḥ pādyādipurassarāṃ tasya pūjāṃ kartum ārabdhavān bhojane ca prārthitavān | tasya ca nātidure nadī | tatra snānābhyudyatasya ca tasya svīyaṃ putram ekam āmalakasnānaśāṭikāsametaṃ pṛṣṭataḥ preṣitavān | asāv api pratyāgacchan dārakam anyasmin mitragṛhe suguptaṃ kṛtvā praviṣṭaḥ | atha bhojanasamaye sārthavāho dārakam adṛṣṭvā samākulamanāś śaṅkitahṛdayaś ca tam apṛcchat | kvāsau dārakas tavānupadapreṣitaḥ | iha na praviṣṭa iti | atha so 'bravīt | śyenenāpahṛtaḥ | tac chrutvā paramāvigno nirdayībhūtaś ca taṃ bāhau gṛhītvā dharmasthānaṃ nītavān ! āha ca | paritrāyadhvam | anena me dārakaḥ kvāpi gopita iti | pṛṣṭaś cāsau prāḍvivākaiḥ | kim etat | kathyatām iti | sa vihasyābravīt | śyenenāpahṛta iti | tatas tair vismitamanobhir abhihitaḥ | kathaṃ śyeno dārakam apahariṣyatīti | dharmādhikṛtais tathyaṃ pṛcchyamāno 'bravīt | kim atra citram | yatra tulā lohasahasrasyāsya gehe madīyā mūṣakair bhakṣitā ! kiṃ bahunā ! kṛtsnaṃ mahīmaṇḍalaṃ samudraparyantam avalokitavān | ardhākhyāte ca tasmiñ jūṭakarṇaḥ parivrāḍ nāgadantopaśliṣṭo muhurmuhur jarjaram avādayat | kathyamānavighne ca kriyamāṇe kupitobṛhatsphig āha | aham ādṛto bhūtvā bhavataḥ kathayāmi ! yena gatāsus tridhāgataśarīro nipatitaḥ | atha tasmin mahati viṣame vṛtte mṛgalubdhakasūkaraprastare kṣutkṣāmakukṣir dardurako nāma gomayur āhārārthī tam uddeśam āgato 'paśyan mṛgasūkaralubdhakān | tāṃś ca dṛṣṭvā paraṃ paritoṣam upāgataḥ | āha ca | [ nānnapānāni satatam utpadyante hi dehinām | labdhvā prabhūtam annādyaṃ kramaśas tūpayojayet || 48 || ] iti | evam uktvā dhanuḥpratibandhaṃ bhakṣayitum ārabdhaḥ | kathamapi daivāc chinne pratibandhe vakṣaḥpradeśe bhinnaḥ pañcatvam upagata iti | [2,2] ato 'haṃ bravīmi | kartavyas sañcayo nityam iti | tat ! brāhmaṇi ! spāṣṭyāj jīvyate | tac ca śrutvā brāhmaṇy- āha | asti me tilastokaṃ taṇḍulastokaṃ ca | sa tvaṃ pratyuṣasy utthāya samitkuśādyānayanārthaṃ vanaṃ gaccha | aham api sahānena śiṣyeṇa kāmandakinā brāhmaṇatrayasya sādhayiṣyāmi kṛsaram iti | tathā cānuṣṭhite tilaprasthaṃ kāmandakinādhiṣṭhitaṃ luñcayetyāstāpitam | tathā cātivyagratvāt te tilāḥ kathamapi daivāc chunā viṭvālitāḥ ! tayā cābhyantarasthayā dṛṣṭāḥ | tato 'sāv abravīt | kāmandake ! na śobhanam āpatitam | vighnam utpannaṃ brāhmaṇatarpaṇasya | tathāpi gaccha ! imāṃs tilāṃl luñcitān api kṛṣṇatilaiḥ parāvartayitvā śīghram āgaccha | kṛṣṇakṛsaram eva kariṣyāmi | tathā cānuṣṭhite yasmin veśmany ahaṃ bhikṣārtham upāgataḥ ! tasminn eva kāmandakir api tilavikrayārtham anupraviṣṭo 'kathayat | gṛhyantām ime tilāḥ | brāhmaṇyābhihitaḥ | kathaṃ tilā dīyantae iti | kāmandakir āha | [ śuklān kṛṣṇaiḥ prayacchāmi yadīṣṭaṃ gṛhyatām iti | tatheme luñcitā bhadre luñcitān eva dehi me ||49 || ] tathā ca vṛtte bhartāsyās samāgataḥ | tenābhihitam | bhadre ! kim etad iti | sā tam āha | samārghās tilā mayā labdhāḥ ! śuklāḥ kṛṣṇaiḥ | tato 'sau vihasyābravīt | [ nākasmāc chāṇḍilī mātā vikrīṇāti tilais tilān | luñcitāṃl luñcitair eva hetur atra bhaviṣyati || 50 || ] iti | evam ākhyāyābravīt parivrāṭ | asti kiñcit khanitram iti | jūṭakarṇa āha | bāḍham ! asti | upanīte ca tasmin kakṣyāṃ baddhvā sandaṣṭauṣṭhapuṭaḥ pṛṣṭavān | kataras tasya sañcaraṇamārga iti | ākhyāte ca tasmin khātakarma kartum ārabdhaḥ | ahaṃ cādāv eva tayor ātmagatam ālāpaṃ śrutvāharam utsṛjya kautukaparo 'vasthita āsam | yadā tv asau durgānveṣaṇaṃ kartum ārabdhaḥ ! tadā mayā jñātam | upalabdham anena durātmanā madīyavivaradvāram iti | mayāpi kenāpi sādhunā pūrvasthāpitaṃ suvarṇam āptam āsīt | tat prādhānyāc cāhaṃ śaktimantam ātmānaṃ manye | asāv api duṣṭo vivarānusārāt tad upalabhya gṛhītvā ca dhanaṃ punar āvasthaṃ prāpto jūṭakarṇam abravīt | idaṃ tasya tad brahmahṛdayam ! yasyāsau sāmarthyād aśakyam api sthānam utpatati | adhārdhaṃ ca vibhajya sukhāsīnau sthitau | taṃ cāham ātmano 'vasādaṃ prāpyācintayam | kadācid ihasthasya me pradīpam ujjvālyāsaṃśayam āsādya māṃ hanyuḥ | iti tasmāt sthānād anyad durgasthānaṃ kṛtavān | anye ca ! ye mamānucarāḥ ! tae āgatya mām abruvan | bhadra hiraṇya ! tvatsamīpavartino vayam atyantakṣudhārtāḥ | grāsamātram apy asmākaṃ nāsti | astaṃ gate 'pi divase na kiñcid asmābhir āsāditam | tad arhasy adyāpi tāvad asmān santarpayitum iti | tathā nāmety uktvāham āvasathaṃ tais samaṃ gataḥ | ekāntāvasthitaś ca tayor durātmanoḥ pūrvākhyāte śeṣam ālāpam aśṛnavam | atha jūṭakarṇas tathaivākhyāne vaṃśam cālayati sma | tenābhihitaḥ | kim adyāpi nirākṛte tasmin muhurmuhuś cālayasi vaṃśam | sthīyatām | alam iti yato 'sāv āha | bhadra ! eṣa mamāpakārī mūṣakaḥ punaḥ punar āyāti | sa vihasyābravīt | mā bhaiṣīḥ | na kiñcid asty etat | yataḥ | [ bhavaty arthena balavān arthād bhavati paṇḍitaḥ | paśyemaṃ mūṣakaṃ pāpaṃ svajātisamatāṃ gatam || 51 || ] api ca | yad asyotpatane śaktikāraṇam ! tad āvayor eva hastagatam | ahaṃ tu tathaiva samarthitavān | satyam āhāyam | na mamādyāṅkulakasyāpy utpatane śaktir astīti | śṛṇomi cānucarāṇāṃ parasparālāpam | āgacchata ! gacchāmaḥ | nāyam adya tṛṇasyāpi kubjīkaraṇe samarthaḥ | evam uktvā pañcāśanmātrā gatāḥ ! punar api pañcaviṃśatiḥ ! daśa pañca ceti ! athānye dvādaśāṣṭau | athāvaśiṣṭau dvau | tatrāpy eko 'bravīt | ayam ātmano 'py udarabharaṇe na samarthaḥ ! kiṃ punar anyeṣām | ity uktvā nirapekṣo 'sāv api prāyāt | tato 'haṃ paricintyaitavad iti svam ālayaṃ gataḥ | prabhātasamaye sarvae eva sapatnasakāśaṃ gatāḥ ! daridro 'sāv iti vadantaḥ | tathā pravṛttānām anucarāṇām eko 'pi na matsakāśam āgacchat | paśyāmi ca ! māṃ dṛṣṭvā sammukhaṃ tae eva matsapatnais saha parasparaṃ kilakilāyanto hastāsphālanair mamānucarās saṅkrīḍanti sma | cintitaṃ ca mayā ! yathā | evam etat | [ yasyārthās tasya mitrāṇi yasyārthās tasya bāndhavāḥ | yasyārthās sa pumāṃl loke yasyārthās sa ca paṇḍitaḥ || 52 || ] api ca | [ arthena hi vihīnasya puruṣasyālpamedhasaḥ | vicchidyante kriyās sarvā grīṣme kusaritoyathā || 53 || tyajanti mitrāṇi dhanair vihīnaṃ putrāś ca dārāś ca suhṛjjanāś ca | tam arthavantaṃ punar āśrayante | artho hi loke puruṣasya bandhuḥ || 54 || daridrasya manuṣyasya prājñasya madhurasya ca | kāle 'py uktaṃ vākyaṃ na kaścit pratipadyate || 55 || caṇḍālaś ca daridraś ca dvāv etau sadṛśau matau | caṇḍālasya na gṛhṇanti daridro na prayacchati || 56 || arthena parihīṇaṃ tu naram aspṛśyatāṃ gatam | tyajanti bāndhavās sarve mṛtaṃ sattvam ivāsavaḥ || 57 || arthena hīnaḥ puruṣas tyajyate mitrabāndhavaiḥ | tyaktalokakriyādāraḥ parāsur iva niṣprabhaḥ || 58 || śūnyam aputrasya gṛhaṃ ciraśūnyaṃ yasya nāsti sanmitram | mūrkhasya diśaś śūnyās sarvaṃ śūnyaṃ daridrasya || 59 || [ uttiṣṭha kṣaṇam ekam udvaha sakhe dāridryabhāraṃ guruṃ kliṣṭo yāvad ahaṃ ciraṃ maraṇajaṃ seve tvadīyaṃ sukham | ity ukto dhanavarjitena viduṣā gatvā śmaśāne śavo dāridryān maraṇaṃ varaṃ sukhakaraṃ jñātvā sa tūṣṇīṃ sthitaḥ || 60 || ]] kim aparaṃ bhoḥ | na kaścid anyaḥ prativacanam api dadāti | [ tānīndriyāṇy avikalāni tad eva nāma sā buddhir apratihatā vacanaṃ tad eva | arthoṣmaṇā virahitaḥ puruṣas sa eva śete hakāra iva saṅkucitākhilāṅgaḥ || 61 || ] tat prāyaśo loke svarūpam īdṛśam | vinipatitam āryam api janaṃ dṛṣṭvā dhany- andho mūkaś ca bhavati dhanamadāvalepāt | tathā ca | [ vilocane cāvikale ca vīkṣate sphuṭā ca vāg asti na cāpabhāṣaṇam | aho nṛśaṃsair vibhavais tathā kṛtaṃ yatheśvaro yācanayantratāṃ gataḥ || 62 || ] tan mādṛśānāṃ kiṃ nāma tad varaṃ syāt ! yasya syād īdṛśaḥ phalavipākaḥ ! yat satataṃ dehīti vakti | tat sarvathā dhanahīnasya mamādhunā neha śreyaḥ | uktaṃ ca | [ vasen mānādhikaṃ sthānaṃ mānahīnaṃ na saṃvaset | mānahīnaṃ surais sārdhaṃ vimānam api varjayet || 63 || ] evam uktvāpy ahaṃ punar apy evam acintayam | kimarthitāṃ kasyacit karomi | tad etat kaṣṭataram | yatkāraṇam ! [ kubjasya kīṭakhātasya dāvaniṣkuṣitatvacaḥ | taror apy ūṣarasthasya varaṃ janma na cārthinaḥ || 64 || kaṇṭhe gadgadatā svedo mukhe vaivarṇyavepathū | mriyamāṇasya cihnāni yāni tāny eva yācataḥ || 65 || ] tad arthitvam api jaghanyam | [ vairāgyāharaṇaṃ dhiyo 'paharaṇaṃ mithyāvikalpāspadaṃ paryāyo maraṇasya dainyavasatiś śaṅkānidhānaṃ param | mūrtaṃ lāghavam āspadaṃ ca vipadāṃ tejoharaṃ māninām arthitvaṃ hi manasvināṃ na narakāt paśyāmi vastvantaram || 66 || ] api ca | [ nirdravyo hriyam eti hrīparigataḥ prabhraśyate tejaso nistejāḥ paribhūyate paribhavān nirvedam āgacchati | nirviṇṇaś śucam eti śokamanaso buddhiḥ paribhraśyati nirdhīkaḥ kṣayam ety aho nidhanatā sarvāpadām āspadam || 67 || ] api ca | [ varam ahimukhe krodhāviṣṭhe karau viniveśitau viṣam api varaṃ pītvā suptaṃ yamasya niveśane | girivarataṭād ātmā mukto varaṃ śatadhā gato na tu khalajanāvāptair arthaiḥ priyaṃ kṛtam ātmanaḥ || 68 || varaṃ vibhavahīnena prāṇais santarpitoanalaḥ nopacāraparibhraṣṭaḥ kṛpaṇo 'bhyarthitojanaḥ || 69 || ] athaivaṃ gate kenopāyena jīvitaṃ syāt | kiṃ cauryeṇa | tad api parasvādānaṃ kaṣṭataram | yatkāraṇam ! dhanaguptenādya kaulikasyāśanaṃ dāpayatā dviguṇavyayenātmā niyojita iti | sarvasya nipuṇaṃ gaṇayāmi | nāsya sthāpanād ṛte dāne bhojane vā kiñcid vihitam | tad ahaṃ prātas samīkaromīti | evaṃ śrutvā pratibuddhaḥ | dhanagupto 'pi prātar viṣūcikayā mahānatyayaṃ gataḥ | svedoṣṇavāripānādinā ca parikliṣyopoṣitaḥ | tatas sa kaulikaḥ prabhāte daivacoditoacintayat | īdṛśena dhanena kiṃ kāraṇam | prakṛtir dustyajeti | tato dvitīyaṃ taṃ vyayaśīlaṃ bhogavarmāṇam uddiśya somilako gataḥ | tenāsau mahatā bhojanapānādinā satkṛtas somilakas tathaiva mahati śayane sopacāre svāstīrṇe niśāyāṃ supto 'paśyat tāv eva puruṣau | tayor eko 'bravīt | bhadra vaṅkāla !
